For the closing of PAVILION NORDICO's current exhibition ‘Reacción A Islandia’ on Saturday April 13th, Cylce founder and show curator Gudny Gudmundsdottir will give a special guided tour through the exhibition followed by a Q&A and Danish artist and musician Adam Christensen will give an extra performance of his work. After, guests are invited for drinks and snacks on the rooftop.
The title of the exhibition quotes the poem ‘A Islandia’ written by the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges in the late 1920s. In the poem, Borges describes his fascination with Iceland’s history, its Sagas, language and unique nature. This fascination is today shared by the millions of tourists who visit the country every year, rendering the romanticised narrative a mainstream consumable cliché. A cliché that has become so ingrown into the natives’ psyche that it is now hard to define the borders between fiction and reality.
‘Reacción A Islandia’ presents a reaction to the narratives surrounding Iceland, partly build on the cliché and partly on the unspectacular, mundane reality of a nation finding its place in the global context.
